RAKWireless's WisBlock system revolutionizes IoT application prototyping and deployment with a 100% modular architecture. By combining Core Modules , Base Boards , Sensor Modules , and Interface & IO Modules , you can assemble a node tailored to your needs in just a few clicks. This flexibility accelerates time to market while controlling costs and energy consumption.
The WisBlock system at a glance
WisBlock is based on four families of modules that connect via a standard 2×20 pin footprint:
- Core Modules : computing and communication unit
- Base Boards : carrier board fixing power supply and connectors
- Sensor Modules : data acquisition (temperature, movement, gas, etc.)
- Interface & IO Modules : digital, analog and industrial bus inputs/outputs
Each module simply clips onto the base, without soldering, for a secure and scalable assembly.
1. Core Modules
Core Modules define the computing power and communication capabilities of your node:
- RAK4631 (nRF52840 + SX1262): ARM Cortex-M4 MCU + LoRa®/BLE, ideal for low-power and mesh network applications.
- RAK3372 (STM32WLE5CC): Full LoRaWAN Class A/B/C support, integrated TCXO for optimal synchronization.
- RAK11200 (ESP32-WROVER): 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi + BLE, perfect for use cases requiring high speeds and OTA updates.
These modules are programmed via the RUI3 SDK or the Arduino™ IDE, and benefit from unified firmware to simplify development.
2. Base Cards
The WisBlock Base serves as a chassis and power interface:
- RAK5005-O : USB-C, 4 sensor slots + 1 IO slot, 5V or battery power supply, ideal for rapid prototyping.
- RAK5005-U : mini variant, 3 sensor slots, compact format for on-board integration.
It automatically manages power distribution (USB, battery, solar panel) and allows direct debugging.
3. Sensor Modules
Sensor Modules cover a wide range of environmental and industrial applications:
- Temperature & humidity : high-precision sensors for environmental monitoring.
- Motion & Orientation : 3-axis vibration tracking and impact detection.
- Gas & air quality : measurement of volatile organic compounds and fine particles.
- GNSS Position : Outdoor/Indoor tracking accurate up to 2.5 m.
Each sensor clips easily, without soldering, and can be programmed to optimize standby consumption.
4. I/O and Interface Modules
To control actuators or communicate with other systems, RAKWireless offers:
- IO adapters : multi-GPIO, industrial buses (RS485, CAN, 4-20 mA, SDI-12).
- Display and alert modules : OLED screens, RGB diodes, buzzers.
- User input modules : joystick, matrix keyboard, touch sensors.
These extensions ensure interoperability with industrial protocols and embedded systems.
5. Advanced Connectivity
Beyond LoRa®, WisBlock has wireless modules for various needs:
- UWB & NFC : high-precision indoor location and secure data exchange.
- LTE-M / NB-IoT cellular : global coverage and low consumption.
- Long range Wi-Fi & BLE via ESP32-WROVER.
These modules integrate on the same Base Boards and benefit from the same SDK for unified development.
Conclusion
The richness and consistency of RAKWireless's WisBlock ecosystem allows you to design custom IoT nodes, from rapid prototyping to mass production. Thanks to its modularity, ease of connection, and variety of interfaces, you have complete control over costs, consumption, and deployment times.
